Beyond The Mediation Room - Teachings and Academics
USC Gould School of Law
Jennifer is a Lecturer in Law at the USC Gould School of Law, where she draws on her extensive background as an attorney, mediator, and conflict-resolution specialist to teach law students practical skills in family dispute resolution. After earning her Juris Doctor from the University of Ottawa and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Dispute Resolution from the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine Law School, she practiced family law and estates litigation before focusing her career on mediation and collaborative family law work in Southern California.
At USC Gould, Winestone co-teaches “Divorce and Family Mediation” (LAW 853) — an upper-level JD course that blends mediation theory with hands-on practice. In this class, students explore the unique dynamics of family law disputes, including issues related to divorce, property, support, and complex custody concerns, and engage in simulations, demonstrations, and discussions based on real-life scenarios to develop both conceptual understanding and practical dispute-resolution skills.
Jennifers role at USC situates her at the intersection of academic instruction and real-world dispute resolution, equipping future lawyers with skills increasingly relevant in family law practice and alternative dispute resolution.
Pepperdine University – Womens Negotiation Acadamy (Coach)
Jennifer served as a negotiation coach for the Women’s Negotiation Academy at Pepperdine University in multiple years since December 2014. In that role she coached corporate executives, lawyers, and business leaders in advanced negotiation skills and strategies.
The Women’s Negotiation Academy is a continuing education and professional development environment where seasoned practitioners—often lawyers, executives, mediators, and professionals in leadership roles—gather to strengthen their negotiation competencies, particularly as they relate to high-stakes, complex deal-making and conflict resolution scenarios.
Winestone’s involvement focuses on helping participants enhance their confidence and tactical approaches to negotiation, drawing on her real-world experience mediating family law and legal disputes, and on foundational negotiation theory.
Her coaching there typically includes:
-
Guided skill-building on negotiation frameworks, interests vs. positions, and crafting creative solutions under pressure.
-
Scenario-based practice that simulates real professional negotiations across legal and business contexts, helping attendees apply advanced dispute resolution techniques to practical problems.
-
Feedback and strategy refinement that helps participants identify and correct common negotiation mistakes, anticipate counter-strategies, and manage power dynamics in negotiations.
Family Law Community
Jennifer’s professional involvement in the family law community extends far beyond her work as a mediator and USC law lecturer; she has been an active and integral member of numerous local and national family law and collaborative practice organizations, helping shape best practices, education, and collaboration among practitioners in the field. As a past board member of the Los Angeles Collaborative Family Law Association (LACFLA), she contributed to the advancement of collaborative law…a voluntary process where lawyers, mental health professionals, and financial specialists work with families to resolve disputes without traditional litigation, emphasizing respectful negotiation and comprehensive settlements.
Winestone was also a member of MFLA (Mediating Family Law Attorneys) and holds a current seat in FLAMES (Family Law Attorneys and Mediators Engaged in Study), two peer organizations composed of local attorneys and mediators focused on deepening understanding of family law mediation, refining dispute resolution techniques, and fostering professional development through study groups, trainings, and practice discussions. In addition, she participates in LAWCDP (Los Angeles Westside Collaborative Divorce Professionals), a cohort of collaborative divorce practitioners dedicated to broadening access to non-adversarial divorce processes and strengthening the community of professionals committed to consensual divorce practice.
Beyond these memberships, Winestone has served in leadership positions in the Beverly Hills Bar Association’s Mediation Section, including Executive Committee member and Immediate Past Co-Chair, where she has helped guide programming, policy discussions, and continuing education for mediators and attorneys working with high-conflict family disputes. She has also maintained roles with the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (California Chapter) and acted as a liaison/consultant for the High Conflict Institute’s New Ways for Families program, bridging the gap between litigation systems and structured, evidence-based dialogue techniques in divorcing families.
Collectively, these engagements illustrate how Jennifer is deeply embedded in the family law and alternative dispute resolution landscape, contributing to education, collaborative process improvement, and professional community building, while advocating for practices that reduce conflict and promote more humane and effective outcomes for families navigating legal transitions.
Local Community Initiatives
Jennifer community talks and school presentations in her home city of Santa Monica and beyond reflect her commitment not just to legal professionals but to families and the broader public navigating conflict and transition. In March 2019, she presented a parent workshop titled “It’s Not Me; It’s You” at Franklin Elementary School, where she spoke directly to parents about relational dynamics and conflict resolution in the context of family life and co-parenting. Later that same year, and in November 2017, she led another parent-focused session at the same school, “Everything I Know About Co-Parenting and Divorce, I Learned in Kindergarten (…And a Few Things I Didn’t, But Wish I Had)”, which used accessible, real-life examples to help families think about how divorce impacts children and how adults can better support them through conflict in ways that prioritize emotional wellbeing. These workshops brought mediation and conflict resolution concepts into the local community, helping parents and caregivers understand the effects of conflict on children and offering practical communication and negotiation strategies for everyday family challenges.
Beyond school settings, Winestone has appeared as a panelist and speaker at events connected to USC Gould and dispute resolution organizations, such as the USC Law School program on non-traditional and alternative careers for mediators, co-sponsored by the Judge Judith O. Hollinger ADR Program and the USC Gould Dispute Resolution Society, demonstrating her outreach to students and young professionals considering mediation as a career. While many of her talks are geared toward legal and professional audiences, these community workshops showcase her ability to translate complex negotiation and conflict resolution principles into practical guidance for families and parents in everyday life.
